Let’s study concept of Hydrogen spectrum…….!

If the hydrogen atom is subjected to external energy & if it is equal or greater than B.E. (13.6 eV) then electron becomes free from atom. If absorbed energy is less than binding energy (+ 13.6 eV), then atom becomes excited.  Its electron jumps to higher energy orbit.  It stays in this state for short interval of time 10-8 sec.  It jumps back to its ground state.  This is called transition of electron. During such transition difference between energies of two states is radiated in the form of photon having frequency & wavelength.

Following spectral lines can be found during transition of electron………..!

1) Lyman series: – This series arises due to transition of electrons from outer orbits to the inner orbit whose quantum number is 1.

The wavelength is given by,

This series lines in ultraviolet region of spectrum.

2) Balmer Series:-This series arises due to transitions of electron from different outer orbits to the second orbit (p = 2).The wavelength is given by,

3) Paschen series:-This series due to transition of electrons from different outer orbits to the orbit (p = 3).  The wavelength is given by,
