Introduction

Women in India or any other country are harbingers of civilization. Women contribute to Indian society in various roles such as education, sports, politics, media, service sectors, science and technology. Women’s employment in the labour and service industry escalate by 0.6% percentage in 2021 The percentage totals 19.23% for women who are active for 15 years economically. With the expansion of working women’s roles, the problems of such women are becoming more diverse.

Discussion

The working environment is a highly competitive place with widespread challenges and tasks that needs to be taken care of by working Indian women. The degree of these problems varies from workplace to workplace, however, the most general issues are:

i) Inequality in pay grade: India, among the countries of BRIC( Brazil, Russia, India and China) represents an economy with the highest gender inequalities. The survey of the Global Gender Gap Report from 2010 states that the inequalities in salaries for men and women account for 25.4%. The differences in pay grades are a result of overwhelming preferences for male employees over women. Consequently, male employees are promoted to higher positions while women’s careers are hindered.

ii) Discrimination between two sexes: Recruiting agency Teamlease Services reports that 5 out of 10 women in specific departments have faced discrimination. The discriminatory attitude is reflected in the recruitment process with only ⅓ of employees hired being women. Pregnant women and those with children face the worst effect of discrimination for they miss out on all the work opportunities due to the added daily responsibilities. Maternity leaves have been made available but they are not aligned with work pressures.

iii) Improper hygiene facilities: Indian census figures from 2011 state that 587 million women accounting for about 48% population in India are associated with work. Out of which only 29% above the age of 15 participate in labour. These women are not given sanitary and hygienic facilities due to a lack of awareness in addition to the existing stigma associated with menstrual hygiene. Proper toilets and facilities are not made despite the regulations laid in documents.

iv)Sexual Abuse: Despite establishing several safety guidelines and internal boards to check sexual harassment, women are victims of inappropriate sexual behaviours. Lack of awareness of proper workplace etiquette and regressive misconception of working women has led to persistent cases of this sort. Harassment of women at the Workplace (prevention, prohibition and redressal) ACT OF 2013 every commercial or public organization with more than 10 female employees need to develop an internal complaint and commission (ICC). However, most companies do not have an effective and transparent commission.

Conclusion

Working women face diverse problems from almost all sections of society. Culturally, women have been hindered from having jobs and economic participation for the stigma associated with women earning a living. Women lack the support to step into the external world with the same dignity thereby missing out on opportunities availed by men. Most workplaces prove to be discouraging with differences in pay grades, workplace behaviour and the non-availability of basic facilities.
