Introduction
Ethics take a central place in any occupation be it in the academic sector, service or corporate sectors. It is defined as the core set of principles and guidelines that administer and influence an individual’s actions. Politics is responsible for the administration of an entire nation vis society as a whole. Ethics is the cornerstone of a nation’s progress in respect of the economy, quality of social structures and standard of living.
Discussion
The thoughts and actions of political leaders influence the minds of the general population of the country. In the largest democracy in the world, India, it is ambivalent to say that ethics and politics do not go hand in hand. As a developing nation ethics could make or break the developmental programmes of the country. There have been contradictory opinions about the degree to which ethics should be followed.
The proponents of following ethics in politics state that, rampant corruption at the highest levels of government has negative consequences for the overall development of the country. The corruption Perception Index ranked India at the 85th position out of 180 countries. The facilities promised to the general public at the time of elections remain in documentation rather than reaching the masses in form of entitlements. For instance, the corruption of recruitment of teachers for government schools in 2022 has been a watershed situation in politics of the West Bengal
Politics without ethics can transform democracy into a dictatorship. By ignoring ethics political leaders can turn a blind eye to the rights guaranteed to the Indian citizens. For instance, the Indira Gandhi-led Congress had instructed the disconnection of electricity in the national
press thus imposing press censorship in 1975 which was later deemed illegitimate. This was followed by unauthorized arrests of opposition leaders.
A proponent who upheld ethics in politics is of the opinion that political leaders with elaborate political histories are from political participation in any form. The depraved activities of the political leaders influence the youth population of the nation in a negative way, resulting in poor infrastructural development.
The absence of ethics in politics results in the manipulation of electoral systems such as using reservations meant for scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, other backward classes and minorities as vote bank politics.
Opponents of integrating ethics in politics such as political realists disapprove of ethical politics as being the first priority. According to them, ethics can create hindrances in making policies for the development of the nation and thus should not be bound by righteous principles.
Conclusion
To conclude, ethics is an ambivalent subject as far as politics is concerned. The demographic conditions as well as the political climate have a major role in determining the degree to which ethics is relevant.
