Introduction

The legendary Greek Philosopher, Aristotle once professed that “Man is by nature a social being, an individual who is unsocial naturally and not accidentally is either beneath our notice or more than human.” Aristotle, through his claims, was pointing out the inherent need of human beings to interact with one another in a social context that is characterized by the exchange of thoughts and ideas. The advent of countless social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram since the early 2010s has facilitated in gratifying the human need for interaction, however, there is a dearth of direct and authentic human interaction that was relevant before the relevance of social media.

Social media like anything another innovation is a boon as well as a bane as far as social interaction is concerned. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Whatsapp, Instagram, Youtube and even G-mail have paved the way for a smoother and more efficient form of interaction irrespective of one’s geographical location. For instance, an individual in India is now capable of interacting with his relatives who have shifted to The USA for pursuing higher studies by sending an email or message, or video calls via Facebook, Whatsapp or Gmail.  According to research done by Researchgate, 96% of human interactions are done on social media. While interactions facilitated by social media during times ushered in by the Covid-19 pandemic when social distancing between individuals was the key to existence, the platforms promote more media than socialization.

Media is a Latin term that refers to communication on a mass level. The content available on social media such as entertainment programmes like stand-up comedy, youtube shorts, reels and stories has swayed users’ attention towards consuming entertainment rather than socializing. The platforms that sought to cater to ease communication between individuals have resorted to focusing on maximizing profits by marketing and promoting multi-billion dollar brands such as Adidas and Nike through advertisements containing videos and clips. Instead of facilitating socialization, social media platforms have become tools to encourage consumerist behaviour.

For instance,  in a study conducted by GlobalWebIndex 54%  of social media users use it to research products while 71% of users end up buying the products.  The over-dependence on social media has threatened users with emerging problems such as depression and anxiety. In addition, existing problems such as obesity are on the rise. In India, an epidemiological study found that 14.5% of adolescents were suffering from anxiety. One demerit of social media is that it has erased all barriers to communication and has been removed, hence individuals are not required to interact in the real world. As such, India is apprehensive about facing a rise in obesity accounting for one obese adolescent in every ten adolescents.

Conclusion

In conclusion, social media is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it has removed all barriers to socialization and interaction, however, it has also removed real-life interaction and the exchange of ideas and thoughts. As such the inherent relationship of human beings with their social environment is at risk. Issues such as anxiety, depression and obesity are at an all-time high.
