Introduction
A hailstorm is a solid form of precipitation which is distinct from rain on one hand and ice pellets on the other. Often wrongly used interchangeably, hailstorm refers to the precipitation of chunks of ice.It occurs due to low surface temperature in contradiction to ice pellets or snowstorms that happen due to cold weather. The western-central state of Maharashtra witnessed a hailstorm incident on 14 May 2021. The seasonal hailstorm locally known as gara uprooted as many as 7 houses in Thane with the regions of Vidarbha and Marathwada taking the worst blows of the seasonal storm.
Discussion
The gara or the seasonal hail storm had the most brutal impact on the local peasant of Maharashtra, especially the regions of Vidarbha and Marathwada Nearly 150 houses were damaged in heavy rain and hailstorm in almost seven villages located in Murbad taluka of Thane district.
In addition to the areas of Vidarbha, Marathwada and Murbad taluka of Thane adjoining villages such as Darkhird, Kelewadi, Alyachiwadi, Merdi, Modhalwadi, Valhivare and Bandeseth had conceded the worst impacts of winter hailstorm. The village is located to the hilly Malsej ghat, considerably disconnected from the main urban centres validating their inability to call for immediate help and rehabilitation.
The destruction of houses was accompanied by ruining of important winter crops such as cotton and sustainable crops such as wheat and barley. The scant electricity connections were damaged as electrical poles collapsed which took away the peasants’ diminishing hopes to call for help,
Research of past hailstorm incidents in the central-western state of Maharashtra state that the economic capital of the country is increasingly becoming a hailstorm prone-zone. The severe effects of the storm had left an impact for twenty days after the storm had subsided. Damages on crops include tattered leaves, broken or damaged shoots and severe damage on scaffold branches. The peasants are anxious and apprehensive about their livelihood as the major livestock of their crops has been ruined and a major amount of crops this season has been ruined accounting for a loss of 1.85 lakhs.
A Jalna district local, Gajanan Jarwal, stated that assessments of the initial days after the storm subsided that around 27000 hectares have been destroyed in the district due to the seasonal hailstorm. About 180 villages from Jalna districts reportedly conceded the worst of impacts.
In addition to the disasters caused by the storm, the pink bollworm attack has menaced cotton cultivation causing even graver economic crises. The peasants belonging to adjoining regions of Jalna, Parbhani, and Aurangabad were affected as well.
Conclusion
To conclude, hailstorms do not occur in cold weather as misinterpreted by mane but is a result of low surface temperatures. The Central-Western state of India, Maharashtra is becoming a hailstorm-prone zone excessively with two incessant attacks in 2018 and 2021.The situation following a hailstorm in the district of Washim witnessed the loss of 8506 hectares of crop belonging to over 8000 peasants in neighbouring villages.
