UPSC Essay 2022: Forests are the best Case Studies of Economic Excellence

UPSC Civil Services (Main) Exam 2022 Essay Forests are the best Case Studies of Economic Excellence by Mahasarkar Team.

 Introduction

The forest coverage of the planet and economic growth are mutually opposing in nature. The total land on the earth’s surface is around 15 hectares of which approximately 70% is suitable for habitation. Population growth compelled the growth of industries for economic benefits leading to a sharp decline of forests. An economic system comprises a man-made aspect that is characterized by the transaction of money, production line and availability of goods to the public on one hand and the natural aspect consisting of forests that are characterized by the regeneration of energy and food cycle.

Discussion

The forests and the economic systems prevalent in contemporary societies are based on a hierarchical and co-dependent structure. In forests as well as the economic system, one aspect is related to the other aspect. For instance, the food chain in a forest goes as follows; grass, the grass is the food of deer which in turn becomes the food for the tiger. The scarcity of grass can lead to starvation of the deer thereby creating a scarcity of food for the tiger leading to a complete imbalance in the food cycle of the forest. The economic system works in a similar interdependent manner as the ecological system of the forest. For instance

A metallurgical company such as Tata steel is dependent upon various departments such as the research and department team that explores new sources of iron ores, the excavation team that is entrusted with the duty of deriving the natural resources, the logistics department for carrying the resources to factories, final manufacturing of the product and ultimate sale of the product to the customers. In each of the instances, one department is dependent upon the consequent department for its survival. The loss in any one of the departments results in the loss of another. It follows a ‘Domino Effect ‘ where the downfall of one tile leads to the collapse of an entire structure.

The survival of companies in such an ecosystem requires resilience. Resilience depends on three key abilities namely, recovery from losses, managing losses and avoiding losses altogether. For instance, the hospitality industry like the ITC group of hotels suffered huge losses during the COVID-19 pandemic. It showed great resilience by recovering the losses by ensuring proper measures like temperature checks, proper sanitation and availability of immediate medical care. They also ensured that such losses do not occur in future.

Conclusion

To conclude, ecological systems in forests in nature and man-made ecosystems in trade markets resemble in terms of chain structures of existence. One department is dependent upon another department’s success to the extent that the failure of one can lead to the downfall of the entire organization. The ecology of a forest depends on the same hierarchical and interdependent relationship as an economic organization.
