Vehicle Moving along Curved Horizontal Road:-

We know that to produce circular motion centripetal force is necessary. The impact of circular motion can be experienced by centrifugal force also.

When we are travelling /driving on curved horizontal road, we are performing circular motion. Hence we need centripetal force and centrifugal force. The motion of vehicle should be balanced by these forces. The speed of vehicle on the curved road depends upon the curvature of road and the existence of frictional forces between tyres of vehicle and surface of road.

Centripetal force acting on the vehicle is given as

Maximum safety speed on curved banked road:

Consider a vehicle of mass ‘m’ moves along a horizontal curved road of radius ‘R’. It performs circular motion on road as shown in fig.

For circular motion necessary centripetal force is provided by the force of friction between the tyres of vehicle and surface of road.

Force of friction = μmg ………(1)

Where μ=coefficient of static friction

To maintain circular motion along the curved horizontal road,

Centripetal force   = Force of friction

The maximum speed of a vehicle depends upon the

  • coefficient of friction
  • radius of curvature and
  • acceleration due to gravity

The force of friction is not reliable. Its magnitude decreases when the road becomes wet due to rains or when oil falls on the road. Thus force of friction will not be able to produce necessary centripetal force and vehicle will skid off. Hence banking of road is necessary.
