Vibrations of Stretched String:-

Hello everyone, in previous article we learnt about the vibrations of air column in a pipe closed at one and pipe open at both ends.

We proved that in case of pipe closed at one end,

i.e. only odd harmonics are present in vibrations of air column when pipe is closed at one end.

Also for pipe open at ends n, 2n, 3n i.e. all harmonic are present when pipe open at both ends.

In this article we are going to discuss the modes of vibrations of transverse waves produced in stretched string.

Let’s learn the concept of vibrations of stretched string in details….!

Consider a string of length L and mass M. Let m be the linear density of the string is stretched between two rigid supports. It is plucked at the center. A transverse wave is set up on string travelling along string with velocity given by,

The diagrams below represents different modes of vibration of stretched string.

First Mode: – The first and simplest mode of vibration is called fundamental mode of vibration and the corresponding frequency is called fundamental frequency.

In first mode of vibration string is plucked at center such that single loop is formed shown in fig. i). So that the length of loop is divided into two nodes and one antinode. If n and λ be frequency and wavelength.

This is called fundamental frequency or 1st harmonic.

Second Mode: For 2nd mode of vibration, there are two loops shown in fig. ii). Let n1& λ1 be the corresponding frequency & Wavelength.

This is called 1st overtone or second harmonic.

Third Mode: For 3rd mode of vibration, there are three loops shown in fig. iii) Let n2 & λ2 be the corresponding frequency & Wavelength.
