MHT-CET Physics Crash Course “Centripetal and Centrifugal Force” Class 12

Centripetal and Centrifugal Force” MHT-CET Class 12 Physics Crash Course| Chapter Rotational Dynamics

In this session G.S. Khairnar will discuss the theory and MCQ’s of “Centripetal and Centrifugal Force”. The session will be useful for all the aspirants of MHT-CET 2022. The session will be in Marathi and English.

Centripetal and Centrifugal Force:-

We know that circular motion is a linear motion of particle along the circumference of a circle is called Circular Motion. There are two types of circular motion.

Eg. Motion of tip of blades of clock.

The acceleration in the circular motion is termed as centripetal acceleration and given as,

Negative sign indicates that the direction of radius vector and acceleration is opposite to each other.

We know that the force is always necessary to produce any kind of motion. There are two types of force, viz 1) Real force and 2) Pseudo force.

For production of circular motion also force is required known as centripetal force.

Centripetal force:

The force which acts on a particle along the radius towards the Centre of the circle and which keeps the particle moving along the circular path is called centripetal force.

According to Newton’s 2nd of motion.

Centripetal force= mass × centripetal acceleration

Some important points

  1. It is real force.
  2. It arises in both inertial and no inertial frame of reference.
  3. It is responsible for circular motion.
  4. Its S.I. unit is Newton (N).
  5. Its dimensions are [M1L1T-2].

Following are the examples in which centripetal force is acts:

  1. The electrostatic force of attraction between electrons and nucleus of atom.
  2. The gravitational force of attraction between planets and sun.
  3. Breaking tensions in the strings and thrust in the rails are the examples of centripetal.

Centrifugal force:

A force which acts along the radius away from the center of circle is called centrifugal force.

Some important points: –

  1. Centrifugal force has same magnitude as that of the centripetal force, but it is oppositely directed.
  2. It is pseudo (imaginary) force.
  3. It arises only in the no inertial frame of reference.
  4. It feels due to inertia property of particle.
  5. It is not responsible for circular motion.

Following are the examples in which centripetal force is acts:

  1. A passenger in car experiences the push on opposite side when the driver is taking turn in either side.
  2. Bulging of earth at equator is due to centrifugal force.
  3. Water in bucket rotating in vertical circle doesn’t falls down due to impact of centripetal force acting on it.
