MHT-CET Chemistry Crash Course Introduction Halogen Derivative Class 12

Introduction Halogen Derivative” MHT-CET Class 12 Chemistry Crash Course | Chapter Halogen Derivaties

In this session Asmita S. More will discuss the theory and MCQ’s of Introduction of Halogen Derivative. The session will be useful for all the aspirants of MHT-CET 2022. The session will be in Marathi and English.

Introduction

When one hydrogen atom of hydrocarbon replaced by one halogen atom is known as halogen derivative or haloalkanes.

Halogen derivative is also called as the alkyl halides.

Similarly, when one hydrogen atom of benzene is replaced by one halogen atom is known as haloarenes.

These compounds are clinically useful.

For example,

chloramphenicol used for the treatment of typhoid fever

chloroquine it is used for treatment of malaria

halothane it is used as anesthetic during surgery

Fluorinated compounds used as a potential blood substitute in surgery.

Classification

(1) On the basis of number of halogen atom

(a) Mono halogen derivative or alkyl halide -When one hydrogen atom replaced by one halogen atom from alkane.

Example

Ethyl bromide

propyl bromide

(b) Di halogen derivative -When twohydrogen atom replaced by two halogen atoms from alkane.

Example

Ethylene dichloride

*Types of dihalogenderivative =

vicinaldihalide–  when the halogen atom is attached to adjacent carbon  atom.

geminaldihalide – When halogen atom is attached to same carbon atom.

(c) Tri halogen derivative – When three hydrogen atoms replaced by three halogen atom from alkane.

Example

1,2,3–trichloropropane

(d) Poly halogen derivative – When more than 3 hydrogen atom replaced by halogen atom.

Example

Sorbitol

2) On the basis of type of carbon atom

(a)  Primary alkyl halide -When halogen atom attached to primary carbon atom (carbon atom which is directly attached to only one carbon atom).

(b) Secondary alkyl halide – When halogen atom is attached to secondary carbon atom(carbon atom which is directly attached to 2 different carbon atoms).

(c) Tertiary alkyl halide – When halogen item is attached to tertiary carbon atom (carbon atom which is directly attached to 3 different carbon atoms).

(3) On the basis of hybridization of carbon atom

(a) Allylichalide -When halogen atom is attached to that carbonator which is next to carbon carbon double bond or which is SP 3hybridised carbon atom.

(b) Benzylic halide – When halogen atom is attached to that carbon atom which is attached to benzene ring.

(c) vinylichalide -When halogen atom is directly attached to SP 2 hybridise carbon atom which is doubly bonded carbon atom.

(d) Aryl halide -When halogen atom is directly attached to benzene ring carbon atom.
