The writer I like the most Essay (State Service Main Exam 2012)
Introduction
English Literature is blessed with a plethora of writers mastering different genres and giving insights into different aspects of life. It is dubious to choose one writer amongst a constellation of literary stalwarts, Charles Dickens would be the writer I like most for he explores the realistic themes of struggle through poverty, desires and aspirations of life, exploitation of the less-privileged and deprived, crimes in society, abuse of power and corruption in his works like Great Expectation, Hard Times and David Copperfield.
Discussion
Charles John Huffman Dickens as he was named at birth on 7 February 1812 was a Victorian author, editor and Journalist who was mostly known for his fifteen novels.
Charles Dickens is especially well known for the construction of the structures of his novels. The most used tool used by Dickens is suspense and mystery, like the origin of ‘Pip’s’ great expectations in the novel Great Expectations. The plots of his novels attract and maintain the readers’ attention through continuous events occurring regularly or by making the readers wait in anticipation irrespective of the events not being associated with the main plot. Dickens uses the tool of subplot with great effect to heighten the tension and complexities of the narrative by giving it the depth and gravity it requires. For instance the principal plot of Great Expectations centres around young ‘Pip’s mysterious journey from rags to riches.
However, the narrative begins with a subplot of Pip’s interaction with a renegade who escaped a prison ship. The subplot aids the readers to get an insight into Pip’s character and intensifies the main plot.
Dickens maintains the suspense of the narrative by not indulging in exposition, i.e: the background story about characters or the events that centre around the narrative. The reader comes to know about the history of the characters gradually with the simultaneous progression of the narrative. For instance, the revelation of Pip’s character evolves from a kind, naive and gentle individual to a rude, cynical and self-centred character who ends up being the gentle and kind man he was at the beginning of the tale. These revelations are only made through Pip’s dialogue with Joe about Estella, “What I wanted, who can say? How can I say when I never knew? What I dreaded was that in some unlucky hour, I, being at my grimiest and commonest should lift up my eyes and see Estella looking in at one of the wooden windows of the forge”
Comic relief is regularly used by Dickens to relieve the gravity and intensity of seriousness characteristic of his narrative. The difference between comic and serious overtones also heightens the tension of the serious episodes. Estella’s exploitation of Pip is balanced out by one character’s abuse towards another.
Conclusion
To surmise, Dickens used a host of symbolism such as fire and hand. In addition to it, he had the redundancy of giving life to inanimate objects as Pip’s fears and guilts are projected onto banks and gates. Along with it, Dickens had a proclivity towards coincidences. In conclusion, was an expert in the prose artform as his skill of writing fits the needs of each event in the narrative.
